Fulacht fia, Ballyvelig, Co. Wexford

On the north-eastern bank of a small stream in Ballyvelig, County Wexford, there sits a low, grass-covered mound of stones that most walkers would step over without a second thought.

Oval in shape and measuring roughly ten metres by six, it rises only about thirty centimetres from the ground. That modesty is part of what makes it easy to overlook, and part of what makes it worth pausing over.

This is a fulacht fia, a type of monument found in considerable numbers across Ireland and dating broadly to the Bronze Age, though some examples span into the early medieval period. The term, from Old Irish, is generally translated as something like "cooking place of the deer", though scholars continue to debate both the translation and the precise function of the sites. The typical fulacht fia consists of a horseshoe-shaped or oval mound of heat-shattered stone, the cracked and fire-reddened debris accumulating over repeated use. The standard interpretation is that stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough, bringing the water to a boil for cooking meat. The stream running south-east to north-west beside this mound would have supplied exactly the kind of reliable water source these sites seem to require. A second, closely related monument lies just five metres to the south-east, suggesting that this particular spot saw repeated or sustained activity rather than a single episode of use.
