Site of Saint Catherine’s Chapel, Loughnageer, Co. Wexford

At Loughnageer in County Wexford, a scrub-covered triangular enclosure sits at the southern tip of a low spur of land, marking the site of a chapel that has left almost nothing visible above ground.

No masonry, no burials, no traceable outline of a building survives at ground level. What remains is largely a matter of memory and cartography: a faint rectangular outline on the 1839 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, annotated as the site of St Catherine's Chapel, measuring roughly twenty metres north to south and eight metres east to west. The enclosure itself is considerably larger, running approximately ninety metres east to west and eighty metres north to south, its boundaries now blurred by neglect and vegetation.

The chapel's association with St Catherine was already understood as a tradition rather than a living presence by the time the Irish scholar John O'Donovan passed through around 1840. O'Donovan, who travelled extensively across Ireland documenting place names and local lore for the Ordnance Survey, recorded the oral memory of a church site here dedicated to the saint, though even then no structure appears to have been standing. The dedication to St Catherine of Alexandria was common enough in medieval Ireland, often attached to sites near water or on routes of local pilgrimage. That connection to water seems relevant here: St Catherine's Well lies approximately 430 metres to the east-northeast, a proximity suggesting the chapel and the well once formed part of the same devotional landscape, the kind of paired holy site, a church and a well bound together by the same patron saint, that was once widespread across the country and is now frequently reduced to one element, or neither.
