Ringfort (Rath), Coddstown Little, Co. Wexford

In a field in Coddstown Little, County Wexford, there is a ringfort that cannot be seen from the ground.

Walk across the pasture above it and there is nothing to suggest that anything lies beneath, no earthwork, no raised lip, no shadow in the grass. The only evidence of its existence comes from the air, where aerial photography reveals a cropmark, the faint but legible ghost of a circular enclosure roughly 35 metres in diameter, with a smaller inner enclosure of around 10 metres picked out inside it.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were enclosed farmsteads typically built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They were usually defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, the ditch being called a fosse, and they served as the agricultural and domestic centres of individual farming families. At Coddstown Little, the fosse that once defined the outer circuit has been reduced, over centuries of cultivation and drainage, to little more than a soil stain. What the aerial photograph captures is a cropmark, a phenomenon where buried features cause subtle differences in plant growth above them, making structures invisible at ground level legible from altitude. The site also appears to have been absorbed into an irregular grid of field drains at some point, suggesting that the land around it was actively managed in ways that gradually eroded whatever earthwork originally stood here.

Because the site leaves no surface trace in the current pasture, there is little for a visitor to observe in any conventional sense. Its interest lies less in what can be experienced on the ground than in what it illustrates about the landscape: that early medieval settlement in County Wexford was dense enough that sites like this one can turn up in ordinary agricultural fields, their outlines preserved only in the chemistry of the soil and the seasonal variation of crops growing above them.
