Burial Ground, Churchtown, Co. Wexford

On the narrow finger of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, a small graveyard holds within its banks the accumulated remnants of two distinct early Christian sites, brought together in a space barely forty metres across.

What makes this arrangement quietly unusual is the presence of a cross from St. Brecaun's church, a monument that has travelled from its original location to sit alongside a cross-inscribed slab within a burial ground associated with an entirely different foundation, that of St. Dubhán's church and the parish church of Hook.

The graveyard itself is subrectangular, its boundaries formed on most sides by earthen banks with external stone-facing, a construction method typical of early ecclesiastical enclosures in Ireland. On the south-eastern side, where it meets a public road, a masonry wall with an internal bank takes over. The peninsula here is low-lying and narrow, no more than about a kilometre and a half wide in places, which gives the landscape a compressed, almost exposed quality. St. Dubhán is associated with the early Christian settlement of Hook, and his name is well embedded in the local geography of the peninsula. The cross-inscribed slab that survives in the graveyard is a simple but direct link to that period of monastic activity. Archaeological testing in 2004, conducted in two long trenches running roughly a hundred metres to the north of the graveyard, produced nothing directly connected to the site, which leaves the question of what lies beneath the enclosure itself largely unanswered.
