Battlefield, Clonee, Co. Wexford

Near the townland of Clonee in County Wexford, a piece of ground carries the designation "battlefield", which is itself a quiet kind of monument.

No walls, no earthworks, no obvious physical trace; just a name applied to a tract of land that someone, at some point, considered significant enough to record formally. Across Ireland, battlefield sites are among the most elusive categories of heritage. Unlike a stone fort or a burial mound, a battlefield leaves almost nothing behind that the soil will hold onto. What remains is usually the name, passed down through local memory and eventually committed to a map or a survey list.
