Ringfort (Rath), Coolishal, Co. Waterford

At the southern edge of a plateau in County Waterford, where the ground drops sharply away into a ravine running northwest to southeast, a ring of raised earth sits quietly beneath a canopy of mixed woodland. It is easy to walk past without registering what you are looking at, but the geometry is deliberate and very old: a near-perfect circle, thirty-eight metres across, defined by a continuous earthen bank and an outer U-shaped fosse, the shallow ditch that was dug to build the bank up in the first place.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically constructed during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Raths were farmsteads rather than fortifications in any military sense; the bank and fosse defined a household's space, protected livestock from wolves and opportunistic raiders, and marked the social standing of the family within. At Coolishal, the bank survives intact all the way around, varying between three and five metres wide and standing up to about one and a half metres on its outer face. A formal entrance gap, just over two and a half metres wide, opens to the south. The fosse runs around the northeastern to northwestern arc, giving the enclosure its defended profile on the side away from the ravine, where the plateau is otherwise open. The steep natural drop to the south and east may have made additional earthworks feel unnecessary on those sides.
