Ringfort (Rath), Glenpatrick, Co. Waterford

At the foot of a severe north-east-facing slope of the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford, a grass-covered circle some 35 metres across sits in the landscape with quiet insistence. This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type surviving from early medieval Ireland, roughly the period between 500 and 1000 AD. Farmers and their families lived within these enclosures, using the banks and ditches less as military fortifications and more as boundaries that marked status, kept livestock in, and kept unwanted visitors out. What makes this particular example quietly compelling is the layering of its defences and the survival of structural detail that brings the domestic reality of that life into focus.

The enclosure is defined by an earth and stone bank, between four and a half and six metres wide, with an external fosse, a flat-bottomed ditch up to 1.8 metres deep, and a further outer bank beyond that. The entrance faces roughly east-north-east and preserves a causeway 4.2 metres wide crossing the fosse, with separate gaps through both the inner and outer banks. Inside, north-west of centre, the footings of a rectangular building survive, measuring approximately 16 by 8 metres, with what appear to be opposing entrances in its longer walls. The geometry of that house, nearly the size of a generous modern living space, gives a sense of the people who once used it. The topography adds another layer of interest: the downslope side of the inner bank has been worn or compressed to almost nothing, while the upslope sides still stand noticeably higher, a small reminder of how the mountain itself has pressed against this place over the centuries. A second rath sits roughly 50 metres to the south-west, suggesting this was once part of a wider settled landscape rather than an isolated homestead.
