Cairn – ring-cairn, Scartnadrinymountain, Co. Waterford

On a mountain col in County Waterford, a roughly circular arrangement of stones sits half-buried in heather, its interior open to the sky. This is a ring-cairn, a form of Bronze Age monument in which a stone ring encloses a central space, thought to have served ritual rather than purely sepulchral purposes. What makes this particular example quietly compelling is not its size, which at about twelve metres across is modest enough, but its density of associated features. A rectangular cist, a type of stone-lined box grave formed from upright slabs and a capstone, abuts the inner edge of the ring at the south-east, its short end visible at around 2.3 metres long. A smaller ring-cairn, only three metres in external diameter, is attached to the north side. A kerb circle sits roughly ten metres to the north-east, and a further cairn lies about thirty metres to the south. The eastern portion of the main ring has been disturbed.

The wider landscape context helps to explain why this particular spot was chosen and returned to. Michael Moore, writing in 1995 in the Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, identified the Monavullagh Mountains as the location of a Bronze Age settlement and ritual centre, and the cluster of monuments on Scartnadrinymountain fits that reading well. The col on which the ring-cairn sits lies below the Carrickaruppera rock outcrop to the north, with further rock outcrops to the south-east, giving the site a natural definition within the upland terrain. These monuments were not isolated acts of burial or commemoration but appear to have formed part of a coherent, repeated use of this mountain landscape over an extended period of prehistory. Forestry operations in 1993 caused damage to the site, though the immediate area was not subsequently planted, leaving the monument exposed and at least partially legible.
