Ringfort (Rath), Kilclooney, Co. Waterford

What makes this ringfort at Kilclooney quietly compelling is a detail that only becomes clear once you understand the effort its builders put into the ground itself. On the north and north-eastern side, the outer fosse, the defensive ditch encircling the enclosure, was cut directly into bedrock. That is not the path of least resistance; it speaks to a deliberate choice to maximise the depth of the barrier on the uphill side, where an approach would have been easiest.

A rath, as ringforts of this earthen and stone type are sometimes called, was the standard farmstead enclosure of early medieval Ireland, in use roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one sits towards the crest of a south-facing slope, its subcircular interior measuring approximately 45 metres on its longest axis. The enclosing bank, built from earth and stone, varies considerably in height depending on where you measure it: at the north-east, the upslope side, the internal face rises to around 1.5 metres, while at the south-west it drops to roughly 0.4 metres, the ground having already fallen away naturally to do some of the defensive work. The entrance, 2.6 metres wide, opens to the south-west. Unusually, there is evidence of ancient quarrying in the interior on the western side, which may explain where some of the material for the bank itself originally came from, or point to later activity within the enclosure. The outer fosse, between roughly 3.3 and 4.5 metres wide at the top, does not survive on the south-western and western sides, lost either to weathering or later land use.

The site is covered today in grass and heather, the bank low enough to seem unremarkable at first glance, though the rock-cut northern section of the ditch remains visible as a distinct feature for those who look for it.
