Megalithic Tombs

Megalithic structure, Carrickanure, Co. Waterford

On the north-western slope of a low hill in Carrickanure townland, County Waterford, there is a small stone chamber that was once logged as a possible megalithic tomb. It has the appearance of something ancient: upright slabs forming narrow walls, two flat capstones laid across the top, and an opening facing east in the manner of genuine prehistoric structures. It is easy to see why someone, at a glance, might have reached for the word megalithic.

When the site was first recorded in 1988, it was entered into the Sites and Monuments Record under that tentative classification. Closer inspection, however, complicated the picture considerably. The chamber is modest, measuring roughly 1.6 metres east to west and only 0.35 metres across internally, with a height of around 0.75 metres, which is rather too small and too narrow to sit comfortably within the tradition of Neolithic passage or portal tombs. The upright walls are formed partly from slabs of the local bedrock that have naturally split along their bedding planes, and the two roofing slabs are propped on the south side by small stones packed with mortar, a detail that points firmly away from prehistoric construction. An external upright stone running along the south side, roughly two metres long, turns out to be part of the bedrock itself. The conclusion reached on review was unambiguous: this is not a megalithic tomb and may not be ancient at all.

What remains is something quietly interesting in its own right. The structure sits just north of an exposed rock outcrop, and it is likely that the natural geology of the hillside did much of the work, with human hands tidying or completing what the landscape had already begun. Whether it served as a small shelter, a field feature, or something else entirely is unclear, and that uncertainty is perhaps the most honest thing that can be said about it.
