Embanked enclosure, Caheruane, Co. Waterford

On the western end of an east-west ridge in County Waterford, a low grassy mound traces an almost perfect subcircular outline across the hilltop. It is easy to walk past without registering what it is, but the shape is deliberate: an embanked enclosure, the kind of enclosed settlement that dots the Irish landscape in various states of survival, this one measuring roughly 38 metres east to west and 33 metres north to south.

What survives is an earthen and stone bank, between 4.7 and 6 metres wide, still standing to an internal height of between 0.8 and 1.3 metres, and slightly higher on the outside at 1.1 to 1.4 metres. Traces of stone-facing survive on the inner side of the bank, suggesting the structure was once more formally revetted, the loose earth held in place by a deliberate course of masonry. The entrance, just 1.8 metres wide, opens to the south-east. Notably, there is no visible fosse, the defensive ditch that typically accompanies enclosures of this kind and that often survives even when the bank above it has eroded. Its absence here is either a genuine feature of the original design or the result of centuries of agricultural disturbance on the surrounding ground. The place-name Caheruane itself carries a trace of the site's nature, deriving from the Irish word cathair, meaning a stone fort or enclosure, suggesting the locality has long been identified with this kind of built environment.
