Bridge, Lacken, Co. Waterford

A modern bridge near Lacken, County Waterford, carries an ancient name it may not have earned. The structure spans the canalised St. John's Pill, a managed watercourse running through low-lying ground beside what was once the Waterford to Tramore railway line, and it has inherited the name 'Shepyn Bridge' from a crossing recorded in a lease document dating to 1495. The trouble is that the original Shepyn Bridge almost certainly stood somewhere else entirely.

The 1840 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map marks a bridge roughly 600 metres to the south-southwest of the current structure, and that earlier location is the more plausible candidate for the fifteenth-century crossing noted by the Reverend Patrick Power in his study of the placenames of the Decies, the old territory covering much of County Waterford. When archaeological testing was carried out in the area during works for the Waterford outer ring-road, investigators searched for physical evidence of a feature at that mapped location, but nothing came to light. The ground gave up no trace of stonework, timber, or any other remnant that might confirm what the old map suggested. So the name has drifted, attaching itself to a later bridge while the original crossing, if it survives at all, remains unconfirmed beneath the surrounding landscape.
