Standing stone, Log Na Giúisí, Co. Waterford

A standing stone that tilts slightly east, where it appears to have suffered some damage at some point in its long life, might not seem remarkable at first glance. But the standing stone at Log Na Giúisí, rising nearly two metres from the crest of a broad north-south ridge in County Waterford, has a peculiarity that rewards closer attention: its cross-section is diamond-shaped rather than the flat or roughly rectangular profile more commonly seen in Irish prehistoric megaliths. Combined with visible inclusions of quartz within the stone itself, it has a distinctly considered quality, as though whoever selected and positioned it was attending carefully to both its physical character and its placement on the skyline.

Standing stones of this kind are among the most enigmatic monuments in the Irish landscape. They date broadly to the prehistoric period, though pinning down a precise era is rarely straightforward without excavation. Their purposes remain genuinely uncertain; some are thought to mark boundaries, graves, or routeways, others may have served ritual or astronomical functions. The orientation of the Log Na Giúisí stone, running roughly east-north-east to west-south-west, hints at a possible deliberate alignment, though whether this relates to a solar event or simply to the lie of the ridge is impossible to say with confidence. The quartz inclusions are worth noting separately: quartz held particular significance in prehistoric Ireland and is frequently found at burial and ceremonial sites, suggesting the choice of this specific stone may not have been incidental.
