On a gentle south-west-facing slope in Liskeelty, County Waterford, there is a near-perfect circle of enclosed ground that most people would walk past without a second thought. It reads as a slightly raised, overgrown patch of grass, roughly 33 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, but the low earthwork that outlines it is the quietly preserved edge of a much older arrangement of space, one that somebody once went to considerable trouble to define and defend.

The enclosure is ringed by an earth and stone bank, between two and three metres wide and rising to about a metre and a half on its outer face. Around the north-west to north-east arc, a flat-bottomed fosse, a defensive ditch, still survives, its base spanning four metres across and dropping roughly 40 centimetres below the surrounding ground. Along the eastern to southern stretch, drystone walling has replaced the original earthen bank at some point, a later intervention that gives the boundary a slightly patchwork quality. The original entrance was on the east side, a modest gap of about a metre and a half, though it has since been widened to two and a half metres, probably to accommodate agricultural use. Embanked enclosures of this type are generally associated with early medieval Ireland, serving as enclosed farmsteads or the protected compounds of local landholders, though without excavation it is difficult to pin down a precise date for this example. The site sits on a toe of higher ground, with north-south valleys and small streams running about 300 metres to either side, a position that would have offered both natural drainage and a degree of visibility over the surrounding landscape.
