Road – class 3 togher, Annaghbeg, Co. Longford

In the bogland of Annaghbeg in County Longford, the remnants of an ancient trackway lie orientated along a northeast to southwest axis, quietly preserving a route that people once relied upon to cross terrain that would otherwise have swallowed them whole.

This is a togher, a type of wooden road or trackway built across boggy or waterlogged ground, constructed by laying timbers, brushwood, or other organic material directly onto the soft surface to create a passable route. The particular example at Annaghbeg is classified as a class 3 togher, a designation within a typological system developed to categorise these structures by their method of construction and complexity.

The site was recorded during field survey work carried out in 1988, and its details were published by Barry Raftery in 1990 as part of his broader work on Irish trackways and wetland archaeology. Raftery was among the foremost scholars of Irish Iron Age and prehistoric archaeology, and his research brought considerable attention to the extraordinary density of ancient bog roads preserved across the Irish midlands. Toghers of this kind survive because the anaerobic, acidic conditions of peatland inhibit the decay of organic material, meaning that timbers laid down hundreds or even thousands of years ago can remain remarkably intact beneath the surface. The Annaghbeg trackway represents one of many such features catalogued through the work of the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit, a research body based at University College Dublin that systematically surveyed bogland sites before drainage and turf-cutting could destroy them.
