Road - class 3 togher, Cloontamore, Co. Longford

Roads & Tracks
Beneath the bogland of Cloontamore in County Longford, there lies a togher, an ancient trackway built to carry people and perhaps livestock across ground that would otherwise have been impassable.
This one is classified as a class 3 togher, a category that refers to relatively simple timber or brushwood construction laid directly onto the bog surface, as distinct from more elaborate engineered examples. What makes toghers quietly remarkable as a class of monument is the bog itself, which, in sealing out oxygen, can preserve organic material for thousands of years, leaving wooden planks and stakes in conditions that would be unthinkable in open soil.
