Platform – peatland, Corragarrow, Co. Longford

In the boglands of Corragarrow in County Longford, a drainage cut through peatland exposed something quietly ambiguous: a scattering of ancient brushwood, preserved in the anaerobic conditions that make Irish bogs such reliable keepers of the past.

Eighteen pieces of wood, ranging from roughly two to six centimetres in diameter, were found spread across a two-metre stretch of a drain face, with two further pieces located about two metres to the south. There was no obvious pattern to their arrangement, no sign that any of them had been shaped or worked by a tool, and yet their presence in the peat was not random either.

The brushwood was recorded by Dunne in 1999 and interpreted as the probable remains of a peatland platform. Such structures, built from laid timber and brushwood, were used in boggy environments to provide stable footing or working surfaces, and occasionally as causeways across otherwise impassable ground. They are not uncommon finds in Irish bogs, though they are rarely dramatic. What makes the Corragarrow material interesting is precisely its indeterminacy: most of the pieces ran east to west, while three ran northwest to southeast, suggesting either a construction logic that time and compression have obscured, or simply the gradual displacement of material through centuries of peat movement. Without woodworking marks to anchor the interpretation, the platform identification remains tentative, a reasonable inference drawn from context rather than a confirmed structure.
