The exposed section measured just 1.6 metres wide and about 15 centimetres thick, the individual branches averaging only four centimetres in diameter, loosely arranged along a northeast to southwest axis with a single piece running across them. Nothing about the wood had been shaped or trimmed with tools; there was no sign of any woodworking at all.

What was found almost certainly represents the remains of a peatland platform, a type of structure known from bogs across Ireland and Britain. Such platforms were typically laid down using brushwood or roundwood to create a stable surface over soft or waterlogged ground, and they could serve a range of purposes: crossing boggy terrain, providing a working surface for cutting turf, or forming part of a more complex wetland structure. Because peat preserves organic material so effectively, even modest and loosely assembled features like this one can survive for centuries or millennia, the anaerobic conditions in the bog preventing the wood from rotting away as it would on dry land. The absence of woodworking marks here suggests the builders used material largely as it came, without the more deliberate carpentry seen in some of the elaborate wooden trackways found elsewhere in Irish bogs. Without dating evidence drawn from the site, the age of the Derryoghil platform remains open.
