What makes it quietly remarkable is not its grandeur but its ordinariness: this is infrastructure, a practical solution to a persistent Irish problem, preserved in the peat long after the people who built and walked it are gone.

The structure is a togher, a type of wooden trackway laid across boggy or waterlogged ground to allow passage where the earth alone would not bear weight. This example runs on a northeast to southwest alignment and measures nearly three metres in width, suggesting it was intended for more than foot traffic, or at least for the comfortable movement of animals and loaded carts. Its construction follows a logic that would have been familiar across early medieval Ireland: a lower substructure of roundwood and brushwood, the thinner material ranging from two to five centimetres in diameter, laid down to spread the load across the soft ground beneath, with larger split roundwood above, some pieces reaching thirty centimetres across, forming the actual surface. A single wooden peg was also recorded, the kind of detail that speaks to deliberate assembly rather than casual dumping of timber. The minimum recorded thickness of the whole structure is half a metre, though the full depth remains unexcavated.
