Platform – peatland, Derryoghil, Co. Longford

In a headland section of cut-over bogland at Derryoghil in County Longford, a narrow band of brushwood emerged from a section face considerably higher than the surrounding milled field surface.

The exposed strip measured just 0.83 metres wide and roughly 11 centimetres thick, its component branches averaging about 3 centimetres in diameter and running on a north-west to south-east alignment. Slight as it sounds, this modest layer of woodwork is understood to represent the remnants of a peatland platform, a deliberately laid surface of interwoven branches constructed to provide stable footing or a working surface across otherwise waterlogged ground.

Platforms of this kind are not uncommon finds in Irish bogland, where the anaerobic, acidic conditions that preserve human remains and wooden objects for millennia also hold onto the quieter evidence of everyday practicality. People living alongside or within boggy terrain regularly constructed such surfaces to move across, work from, or store materials on ground that would otherwise be impassable. The brushwood here, preserved beneath accumulated peat until industrial milling brought the section face to light, offers a glimpse of that kind of low-key, functional landscape management, the sort of evidence that rarely makes it into popular accounts of Irish prehistory precisely because it is so ordinary in purpose. The precise date of the platform is not recorded, and the sparse nature of the exposed material means the full extent of the original structure remains unknown.
