Ecclesiastical enclosure, Curreentorpan, Co. Roscommon

In a field at Curreentorpan in County Roscommon, a circular enclosure sits quietly beneath a skin of grass, its boundaries almost imperceptible to anyone who does not know to look.

What makes it worth attention is the geometry: the circle measures roughly 66 metres north to south and 63 metres east to west, and its perimeter is formed not by an earthen bank in the usual sense but by a spread of stone, now grass-covered, that varies considerably depending on which side you examine. The eastern side rises with more definition, the stone spread there reaching around 3.6 metres wide with a modest but legible internal height. The western side is lower and broader, nearly 6.5 metres wide but barely 0.1 metres above the interior ground level.

Circular ecclesiastical enclosures of this kind are a recurring feature of the early Irish Christian landscape. They typically enclosed a church, burial ground, and ancillary buildings, and the rounded boundary was often understood to demarcate sacred space as much as to provide physical protection. At Curreentorpan, the arrangement follows that pattern: a church sits within the enclosure, and a later rectangular enclosure shares the eastern perimeter of the circle, its own eastern wall effectively doubling as the curved boundary of the older one. That kind of overlap, where a more recent rectangular layout inherits part of an earlier circular one, is a small but telling sign of the long and layered use these sites often accumulated over centuries.
