The building is not small: measuring roughly twenty metres north to south and eight metres east to west, it occupies a commanding footprint on its rocky platform. Attached to its south-western side is a rectangular enclosure of similar proportions, and beneath the whole arrangement lies an older field wall, part of a wider field system that the house and enclosure were built directly on top of.

That overlying relationship is what makes the site quietly telling. Whoever constructed this house chose to place it across an already-existing boundary, which suggests either that the earlier field system had long fallen out of use by the time the building went up, or that whoever built here simply did not feel bound by the earlier organisation of the land. The date of the house is not known with any precision, which is itself a common situation in rural Ireland, where stone structures of this kind can belong to any period from the medieval centuries right through to the post-medieval era of agricultural reorganisation and population pressure. The plateau of rock outcrop on which it sits would have offered a firm, dry foundation in an otherwise variable landscape, a practical consideration that likely guided the choice of location as much as anything else.
