Children’s burial ground, Curraghadoon, Co. Roscommon

At Curraghadoon in County Roscommon, a ruined church and its surrounding enclosure carry a designation that the ground itself cannot confirm.

Local tradition holds that this was once a children's burial ground, a place where unbaptised infants were laid to rest outside the rites and spaces of the official Church. Yet no physical evidence has emerged to support that use.

Children's burial grounds of this kind, known in Irish as cillíní, are scattered across the Irish landscape, often occupying marginal or liminal spots: old enclosures, ancient ecclesiastical sites, field boundaries, or shorelines. They reflect a long and quietly sorrowful practice, rooted in the theological position that unbaptised children could not be interred in consecrated ground. The site at Curraghadoon sits on a slight slope falling away to the north and east, in low-lying terrain, associated with both a church ruin and an enclosure, features typical of early medieval ecclesiastical foundations. The tension here is between what tradition insists on and what archaeology has so far found. That absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence, and the local memory of the site as a place of infant burial may preserve something real about how communities once used and understood the landscape around them, even when the ground keeps its own counsel.
