The structure is modest almost to the point of invisibility: a stony bank less than a metre wide and barely ten centimetres high traces a footprint measuring five metres from north to south and three metres from east to west. What makes it quietly unusual is its position, tucked against the interior of a rath, using the older enclosure's own earthen bank as a ready-made wall on its eastern side.

A rath, sometimes called a ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built primarily during the early medieval period in Ireland, though many continued in use or were reoccupied long afterwards. The practice of building a secondary structure inside a rath was not unheard of; the enclosure offered both physical shelter from wind and, perhaps, a sense of boundary or protection. Here at Carrowclogher, whoever constructed this small house-site, at a date that remains unknown, made practical use of what was already standing. The low-lying landscape would have offered little natural shelter of its own, making the rath's bank a logical anchor point. The house-site is recorded in association with the rath catalogued as RO029-070001, though the two features need not be contemporary with one another.
