Holy well, Derrynalester, Co. Cavan

At Derrynalester in County Cavan, a small stone-lined well sits in the landscape with enough structural formality to suggest it was never simply a matter of digging a hole and hoping for water.

The well is built from drystone masonry, meaning the stones are fitted together without mortar, relying on their own weight and careful placement to hold their shape. It measures roughly 3.6 metres on its longer axis and 2.8 metres across, making it a compact but deliberate construction, with a lintelled entrance at the south-west just over a metre high and a series of stone steps descending into it from the south-east. That entrance, with its low stone lintel framing the way in, gives the whole structure something of the feel of a threshold, a place you have to stoop to enter.

The well appears on all Ordnance Survey editions, which places its documented existence across the full span of systematic Irish mapping going back to the nineteenth century, and almost certainly reflects a tradition considerably older than that. Every year on the 13th of August, patterns are held here. A pattern, from the Irish "paitrun" meaning patron, is a gathering held on a saint's feast day, combining prayer, ritual circuits of a sacred site, and often a more social gathering afterwards. The specific saint associated with this well is not recorded, but the August date points to a local feast day preserved through generations of practice rather than formal ecclesiastical record. That continuity, a congregation returning to the same stone steps on the same calendar date year after year, is itself a kind of quiet persistence that formal history rarely captures well.
