Megalithic Tombs

Giant’s Grave, Cohaw, Co. Cavan

Near the top of a ridge in undulating Cavan pasture, a scatter of large stones sits within a low, barely-there mound.

To the untrained eye it reads as a field cleared of its inconvenient rocks, but the arrangement is deliberate, ancient, and only partially understood. Archaeologists cannot yet say with certainty what type of megalithic tomb this is, which places it in a curious category of its own: a prehistoric structure that has outlasted the knowledge needed to fully interpret it.

What survives appears to be the remnant of a gallery, a roofless stone-lined passage that once formed the burial chamber of a megalithic monument, running at least 4.20 metres along a southwest to northeast axis. Two upright stones, known as orthostats, stand 1.40 metres apart at the southwestern end and are thought to mark the original entrance. A third orthostat beside the southern of these may once have formed part of a flat facade, a characteristic feature of certain tomb types where a straight-fronted wall of stone was constructed across the entrance end. A further sidestone stands 1.70 metres east of the northern entrance stone, and a number of displaced stones lie scattered around the structure. The whole is enclosed by a small, low mound, though much of whatever once covered and defined the monument is long gone. Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin noted the site in their 1972 survey of Ireland's megalithic tombs, cataloguing it as number 20 in Cavan, but even they could not pin it to a specific tradition. The current thinking leans toward a wedge-tomb, a form common in the west and midlands of Ireland, typically dating to the later Neolithic or early Bronze Age, in which the gallery narrows and lowers toward the rear, but the damage here is too extensive to confirm that classification with confidence.
