Ringfort (Rath), Corfeehone, Co. Cavan

What was once a complete circular enclosure, a rath, is now only partially legible. A rath is an early medieval earthwork, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth century, built to enclose a farmstead and mark the status of its occupants. This one retains a raised central area of around twenty-six metres internal diameter, and its earthen bank still survives, but the northwestern to east-southeastern arc has been pulled out of its original curve and run straight, folded into the modern field boundary so thoroughly that the original entrance can no longer be identified.

This kind of slow erasure is not unusual in the Irish countryside, where tens of thousands of raths once dotted the landscape and many have been lost entirely to agriculture. What makes this example worth noting is precisely how the process is visible. The surviving portions of the bank still trace their original arc, giving enough of the circle to understand what stood here, while the altered section shows how generations of farmers incrementally repurposed the earthwork, treating it less as an ancient monument than as a convenient ready-made boundary. The result is a site caught between two histories, one from the early medieval period and one from the long, undocumented work of land management that followed.
