Megalithic tomb – portal tomb, Aghawee, Co. Cavan

In a stretch of rolling pasture just 400 metres south of the River Erne, a small but carefully arranged arrangement of ancient stones sits largely unannounced in the Cavan landscape.

It is a portal tomb, a type of megalithic monument built during the Neolithic period, typically consisting of two upright portal stones framing an entrance, with side stones and a large capstone forming a chamber. What makes this example quietly compelling is how much survives in legible form despite its modest scale and the damage time has done to it.

The chamber faces east and measures two metres in overall length, narrowing as it runs towards the back, a feature typical of portal tombs. The two portal stones, set just 0.4 metres apart and each standing around 1.5 metres high, mark the entrance with some formality. Single stones form each side wall, overlapping the portal stones, and the backstone, which leans inward, survives at about 0.7 metres high. The roofstone is broken, so the chamber no longer holds its cover, but traces of a cairn, the mound of stones originally heaped over and around the structure, remain visible at the western end. The monument was catalogued by Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin in their 1972 survey of megalithic tombs across Ireland, which remains a foundational reference for this class of monument.
