Fort, Druminshingore, Co. Leitrim

Most ringforts in Ireland occupy commanding ground, positioned on hillsides or ridge-tops where their occupants could see and be seen.

The fort at Druminshingore does the opposite. It sits low, tucked into flat land between drumlins, those rounded glacial hills that give County Leitrim much of its lumpy, enclosed character. Whatever logic placed it here, whether for access to water, proximity to good grazing, or reasons now entirely lost, it was not the logic of the high ground.

What survives is a grass-covered subcircular platform, measuring roughly 31.5 metres on its northwest to southeast axis and 26 metres across the other way. It is defined on the east, south, and northwest by a fosse, the term for a defensive ditch, which runs between 5.5 and 6 metres wide at the top and narrows to 2 or 3 metres at the base, though it is now quite shallow at around 0.2 metres deep. The interior platform is raised, held up on its north side by a scarp of about one metre and on the west by one closer to 1.6 metres. Elsewhere, a field bank with an outer drain takes over where the fosse leaves off. No original entrance has been identified, which is not unusual for sites of this kind after centuries of agricultural disturbance and gradual erosion, but it does leave the structure with a slightly sealed, self-contained quality, as though it has quietly withheld that detail.
