Crannog, Esker, Co. Leitrim

At the southern end of Cloonfinnan Lough in County Leitrim, a circular island sits quietly in the water, looking for all the world like a natural feature that simply grew there.

It is not. The island is a crannog, an artificial or heavily modified lake dwelling constructed in early medieval Ireland, and beneath the overgrown vegetation that now covers it lie the structural bones of a place where people once lived, worked, and defended themselves from the water itself.

The island measures roughly 33 metres in diameter and rises about 1.75 metres above the waterline, a modest but deliberate profile. What makes this particular example worth pausing over is what remains visible in the lake around it: lines of timber uprights and wattle bedding, the woven-branch material used to consolidate the crannog's foundations, still preserved in the water, most clearly along the western to north-north-eastern arc of the structure. Inside the overgrown interior, a quernstone has been recorded, a circular grinding stone used to mill grain by hand, a small but direct trace of domestic life. The lake itself, Cloonfinnan Lough, is a subrectangular body of water roughly 700 metres at its longest, though the 1835 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map suggests it was somewhat larger then, with dimensions closer to 770 metres, which hints at gradual changes in the landscape over the intervening two centuries.
