The building itself has been almost entirely consumed by vegetation, but what survives tells a more layered story than the overgrowth might suggest.

The church at Richardstown is a single-cell structure, meaning nave and chancel run together without division, measuring roughly eleven metres by five. It was built of limestone blocks and greywacke, a dark, coarse-grained stone common in the region, laid in roughly coursed fashion. The west gable is the most legible remnant, preserving a single-light window with a round-headed arch and moulded sandstone jambs that archaeologists date to the late twelfth century, placing the original construction somewhere around 1200. The building was not left untouched, however. Opposing doorways set into the north and south walls near the west end point to substantial alterations carried out in the fifteenth or sixteenth century, a period when many older Irish churches were modified or partially rebuilt. The font, with its simple oval basin, likely predates those changes. Scattered across the surrounding graveyard are several pieces of cut stone that have been repurposed as grave-markers, fragments of an older worked fabric pressed into continued use. The church sits downslope to the north of Richardstown tower house, a fortified residence of the late medieval period, and the two structures together suggest a small but organised settlement that has since largely vanished from the landscape.
