A ringfort once occupied the summit of a low hill here, and by the time anyone thought to look for it again, it had been erased entirely from the landscape.

When the site was recorded in 1968, it presented as a circular, grass-covered area roughly 40 metres across, defined by a large earthen bank that was already overgrown and partially removed along its south-western to west-north-western arc. Ringforts, which are the most common monument type in the Irish countryside, were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, their enclosing banks offering both a degree of physical security and a visible statement of status. At Drumgor, no fosse, the external ditch that ordinarily accompanies such a bank, was visible at the time of survey. The original eastern entrance survived, its base measuring 1.7 metres across. A farm lane ran along the outside of the bank from the north-north-west around to the east, and the whole monument sat within a network of surrounding field banks. Sometime between that 1968 description and the year 2000, the fort was removed altogether, most likely through agricultural improvement of the kind that claimed thousands of similar sites across Ireland during the latter half of the twentieth century.

What makes Drumgor quietly significant is precisely its absence. The site now serves as a small record of a common loss, one episode in a much broader pattern of erasure that transformed the Irish countryside in the decades after the Second World War. The hill at Drumgor remains, but the thing that once gave it meaning in the human landscape is gone.
