Ringforts

Fort, Lisacullion, Co. Monaghan

On the spine of a drumlin ridge in County Monaghan, a nearly perfect circle of earth sits overlooking the quiet water of Lough Lisacullion.

It is roughly thirty metres across, its enclosing bank still rising to about two metres on its outer face, and the whole thing is so thoroughly grown over with blackthorn and furze that it reads more like a thicket than a monument. That combination of geometric precision and botanical unruliness is part of what makes it worth a second look.

This is an earthen ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement built across Ireland roughly between the early medieval period and the early historic era, typically by a farming family of some local standing. The bank, which measures between four and a half and six metres at its base, would originally have defined a domestic or agricultural enclosure; beyond it to the north and east runs a shallow outer fosse, a cut ditch that reinforced the boundary. The ringfort sits at the north-western end of its drumlin ridge, with the eastern shore of Lough Lisacullion about 170 metres to the west, a position that offers both drainage and outlook. Two entrance gaps survive, one at the south-east and one at the west, each around two metres wide, though which of these represents the original entrance is uncertain. The interior has not been left entirely alone by later centuries: by 1967 a field bank had been laid across it in a north-west to south-east direction, and by 2005 that same line had been converted into a farm lane, quietly folding an ancient enclosure into the working rhythms of the land around it.
