Fort, Bocks, Co. Monaghan

Just below the crest of a drumlin, one of the smooth glacially-formed hills that give County Monaghan much of its rolling character, sits a roughly circular earthwork that most people passing nearby would take for a natural rise in the ground.

The grass and scrub have done their work well, softening the outlines of a structure that was once a deliberate and carefully engineered enclosure. At its widest it measures 33 metres north to south and just under 30 metres east to west, dimensions that place it firmly in the tradition of the Irish ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement used from the early medieval period onward, typically as a farmstead or place of local authority. What keeps this one quietly interesting is the combination of its earthen bank, which retains traces of an outer stone facing, and the shallow fosse, a defensive ditch, that still runs around the outside.

The bank itself, measured at the northern arc, stands about 0.8 metres above the interior ground level and 1.6 metres above the base of the outer fosse, with a width of nearly four metres at that point. The fosse, though now much reduced, originally added meaningfully to the apparent height of the bank when viewed from outside, a common technique for making an enclosure appear more formidable than its raw dimensions might suggest. There are two potential entrances: a narrower gap through the bank on the east-south-east side, just under a metre wide at the base, and a broader opening to the south, roughly two metres across. The southern entrance is considered the more likely original, its greater width being more consistent with typical ringfort access points. The fort sits with Bocks Lough lying to the west, a position that would have offered both a natural outlook and, in earlier centuries, a useful combination of visibility and proximity to water.
