Ringfort (Rath), Killarue, Co. Monaghan

What survives of this ringfort at Killarue is, by any measure, a fragment.

A grass-covered scarp curving roughly twenty-seven metres across the southern arc of what was once a circular earthwork enclosure is about all that remains, rising to just under one and a half metres at its highest point. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. They served as farmsteads for families of some local standing, as much about enclosing livestock as fortifying against enemies. This one at Killarue offers only a southern ghost of that original form.

The site sits towards the lower slope of a drumlin ridge running northwest to southeast, the kind of low, whale-backed glacial hill that defines so much of the Monaghan landscape. Drumlins were shaped by retreating ice sheets and tend to cluster in swarms across counties like Monaghan, Cavan, and Down, creating a famously lumpy terrain of small hills and wet hollows. The choice of a lower slope rather than the exposed crest is a small but telling detail, suggesting the occupants valued some shelter and proximity to workable land over commanding views. By 1907, when the Ordnance Survey recorded the site on its six-inch map, the fort was already reduced to the arc of hachures visible on that edition, indicating the earthwork was already fragmentary by the early twentieth century. The northern and western sections of the enclosing bank have been lost entirely, leaving only the southeastern to southwestern curve as visible evidence of the original structure.
