Hermitage, Dysart, Co. Laois

A graveyard in County Laois carries the name of a ninth-century bishop and scholar, yet contains no visible trace of the hermitage that supposedly stood there.

The place is called Dysart Enos, an anglicisation of Díseart Aonghasa, meaning the hermitage or desert of Aonghas. In early Irish Christianity, a díseart was a place of withdrawal and contemplation, often associated with a single holy figure who retreated from the world to pray and study. Here, nothing survives above ground to mark that retreat.

Aonghas, known as Aonghas of Tallaght, was a bishop who died around 830 AD and left behind one of the most significant works of early Irish ecclesiastical literature. The Féilire Aonghasa, or Martyrology of Aonghas, is a verse calendar of saints' feast days, and tradition holds that he began writing it at this very foundation in Laois before completing it at the monastery of Tallaght in what is now County Dublin. That a text of such scholarly ambition was reportedly set in motion in a small, contemplative settlement in the Irish midlands says something interesting about how early medieval learning worked, dispersed across modest sites rather than concentrated in grand centres. The connection between this quiet Laois townland and one of the foundational documents of Irish hagiography is not widely known.

For anyone who makes their way to Dysart graveyard, the absence itself is part of what makes the place worth considering. The hermitage has left no stonework, no earthwork, no outline that a visitor could point to. What remains is the name, folded into the landscape, and the knowledge that someone here, over twelve hundred years ago, was writing.
