Fair Green, Dysart, Co. Laois

A field in County Laois holds a curious double life on paper.

The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1838 marks a small circular earthwork here, roughly 28 metres across, and labels it plainly as "Fair Green". That combination, an ancient earthen enclosure pressed into service as a focal point for country fairs, is the kind of quiet repurposing that Irish landscapes quietly accumulated over centuries. Today, the field shows no surface trace of the earthwork at all.

The site sits atop a natural gravel ridge outside the townland of Dysart Enos, with open views in every direction, which would have made it practical for both surveillance and assembly. The circular form has led some to suggest it may be the remnant of an Anglo-Norman motte or ringwork, the kind of defensive earthen structure introduced into Ireland following the twelfth-century invasion, though this identification remains uncertain. What is clear is that the ridge already had notable neighbours: Piggott's Castle lies roughly 390 metres to the north, and Dysart church and its graveyard sit about 210 metres to the west-southwest. Whether that clustering reflects deliberate Anglo-Norman settlement planning or simply the logic of a defensible hilltop being reused across generations is an open question. By the nineteenth century, at least, the ground had a firmly civilian purpose. According to O'Hanlon and O'Leary, writing in 1907, fairs were held here on Whit-Monday and on the 12th of October each year, the latter date following the old calendar pattern of autumn livestock and goods markets that once punctuated rural Irish life.
