Mill, Knockanina, Co. Laois

The six-inch OS maps, produced first in 1841 and revised again in 1909, were remarkably thorough documents of rural Ireland, recording field boundaries, lanes, and individual buildings across the country. That this structure on the Nore river was omitted from both editions makes its physical survival all the more curious.

The building dates to the eighteenth century and stands in undulating countryside above the river at Knockanina. Its purpose, grinding corn, connects it to a well-documented local tradition. The historian William Carrigan, writing in 1905, noted the existence of corn-mills along this stretch of the Nore, placing the site within a broader pattern of milling activity that once made use of the river's flow through this part of Laois. A corn mill of this period would typically have been a working hub for the surrounding agricultural community, processing locally grown grain into flour or meal. No evidence of earlier structures has been found on the site, so the eighteenth-century remains appear to represent its first and only phase of construction, modest in origin and apparently unrecorded by the cartographers who passed through generations later.
