The 1911 Census recorded 8,851 people named Stewart in Ireland, about 0.202% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 63rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 4,246 men and 4,591 women. (A small number, 14, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was Stewart country: 36.3% of them (3,216 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (1,642), Derry (970), Donegal (794) and Tyrone (570).

The average Stewart in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.2 for men and 30.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11%), textile worker (5.2%), general labourer (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14% of all Stewarts, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

What religion is Stewart?

The largest religious group among Stewarts was Presbyterian, at 48.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (31.5%), Roman Catholic (11.5%), Methodist (4.4%) and Congregationalist (1.1%).
