The 1911 Census recorded 8,488 people named Robinson in Ireland, about 0.194% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 72nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 4,077 men and 4,391 women. (A small number, 20, had no sex recorded.)

The average Robinson in 1911 was 28.9 years old, 28.0 for men and 29.7 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Robinson literacy in 1911

Of the Robinsons whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (444), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (359), followed by Sarah, Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane.

The most common entry on a Robinson's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (1,710) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.2%), textile worker (4.8%), general labourer (4.2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.2% of all Robinsons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

What religion is Robinson?

The largest religious group among Robinsons was Anglican, at 38.3%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (32.3%), Roman Catholic (20.2%), Methodist (3.8%) and Congregationalist (1.3%).
