The 1911 Census recorded 5,247 people named Mitchell in Ireland, about 0.12% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 147th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,614 men and 2,625 women. (A small number, 8, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Mitchell in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Mitchells, 17.6% (925 people). Next came Galway (636), Dublin (498), Down (471) and Derry (418).

The average Mitchell in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 29.2 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Mitchells whose literacy was recorded, 78% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 17.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (344), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (258), followed by Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Mitchell's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (1,083) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.4%), textile worker (3.8%), general labourer (3%) and farm labourer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Mitchells, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Mitchell?
The largest religious group among Mitchells was Roman Catholic, at 42.9%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.9%), Presbyterian (25.3%), Methodist (2.1%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.1%).
