The 1911 Census recorded 5,073 people named Russell in Ireland, about 0.116% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 152nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,453 men and 2,615 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Russells, 17.1% (870 people). Next came Down (764), Dublin (678), Cork (490) and Tipperary (466).

The average Russell in 1911 was 28.7 years old, 27.9 for men and 29.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Russell literacy in 1911

Of the Russells whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (326), James, William, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (292), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Elizabeth.

Russell occupations in 1911

The most common entry on a Russell's census form was "Scholar"; 20.8% (1,056) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.3%), general labourer (4.3%), textile worker (3.5%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.5% of all Russells, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

What religion is Russell?

Most Russells, 51.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (22.5%), Anglican (20.5%), Methodist (2%) and Unitarian (1%).
