The 1911 Census recorded 4,044 people named Monaghan in Ireland, about 0.092% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 218th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,059 men and 1,982 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Monaghan in Ireland
Galway had the largest share of Monaghans, 11.4% (462 people). Next came Mayo (451), Fermanagh (379), Tyrone (285) and Meath (274).
Monaghan average age in 1911
The average Monaghan in 1911 was 31.5 years old, 31.5 for men and 31.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Monaghan literacy in 1911
Of the Monaghans whose literacy was recorded, 71.9% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 22.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Monaghan common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (292), John, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (326), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.
Monaghan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Monaghan's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (835) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.6%), farm labourer (4.9%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Monaghans, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Monaghan?
Monaghans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (2.5%), Anglican (2.2%) and Methodist (0.2%).
