The 1911 Census recorded 4,015 people named Redmond in Ireland, about 0.092% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 222nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,963 men and 2,045 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

The average Redmond in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (294), Patrick, James, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (348), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Ellen and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Redmond's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (770) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.3%), farm labourer (6%), general labourer (5.5%) and domestic servant (4.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.9% of all Redmonds, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

What religion is Redmond?

Redmonds were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (5%), Presbyterian (4.7%) and Methodist (0.2%).
