The 1911 Census recorded 3,956 people named McCormick in Ireland, about 0.09% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 226th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,901 men and 2,049 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim was McCormick country: 34.5% of them (1,365 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (777), Tyrone (234), Donegal (228) and Dublin (215).

The average McCormick in 1911 was 30.1 years old, 29.3 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McCormick literacy in 1911
Of the McCormicks whose literacy was recorded, 79.4% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 15.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 78.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (239), James, William, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (201), followed by Margaret, Annie, Catherine and Bridget.

The most common entry on a McCormick's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (786) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), textile worker (6.1%), general labourer (4%) and domestic servant (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.7% of all McCormicks, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McCormick?
Most McCormicks, 53.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (22%), Anglican (17.3%), Methodist (3.5%) and Unitarian (0.8%).
