The 1911 Census recorded 3,667 people named Millar in Ireland, about 0.084% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 245th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,763 men and 1,904 women.

The Millars were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 53.8% of them (1,973 people). Next came Down (524), Derry (384), Tyrone (184) and Donegal (116).

The average Millar in 1911 was 28.2 years old, 27.8 for men and 28.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Millar literacy in 1911
Of the Millars whose literacy was recorded, 80.2% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 15.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (217), William, James, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (165), followed by Annie, Elizabeth, Jane and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Millar's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (778) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.7%), textile worker (6.7%), general labourer (3.7%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.7% of all Millars, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Millar?
Most Millars, 55.3%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24%), Roman Catholic (11.4%), Methodist (3.9%) and Unitarian (1.4%).
