The 1911 Census recorded 2,458 people named Savage in Ireland, about 0.056% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 359th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,183 men and 1,268 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

Down was Savage country: 32% of them (786 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (523), Dublin (267), Kerry (167) and Cork (162).

The average Savage in 1911 was 28.8 years old, 27.6 for men and 30.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Savage literacy in 1911
Of the Savages whose literacy was recorded, 79.9% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Savage common first names
The most common male names were John (152), James, Patrick, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (166), followed by Elizabeth, Margaret, Annie and Ellen.
Savage occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Savage's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (490) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), textile worker (4.8%), general labourer (4.5%) and farm labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.6% of all Savages, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Savage?
Most Savages, 64.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (15.6%), Presbyterian (15.1%), Methodist (2.7%) and Unitarian (0.4%).
