English in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 2,409 people named English in Ireland, about 0.055% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 372nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,184 men and 1,223 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with English in Ireland
Tipperary had the largest share of Englishes, 20.2% (487 people). Next came Antrim (286), Dublin (220), Limerick (212) and Down (184).
English average age in 1911
The average English in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.8 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
English literacy in 1911
Of the Englishes whose literacy was recorded, 79.5% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 16.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
English common first names
The most common male names were John (160), James, Michael, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (190), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
English occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an English's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (457) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.5%), general labourer (4.3%), farm labourer (4%) and textile worker (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.1% of all Englishes, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is English?
Englishes were predominantly Roman Catholic (73%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (13.3%), Presbyterian (11.5%), Methodist (0.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
