That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Davidsons whose literacy was recorded, 79.6% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 16.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.4%), textile worker (5.2%), general labourer (3.6%) and farm labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.5% of all Davidsons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Davidson?
Most Davidsons, 51.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (31.4%), Roman Catholic (5.6%), Methodist (5.4%) and Congregationalist (1.5%).
