Blair in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 2,219 people named Blair in Ireland, about 0.051% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 394th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,077 men and 1,139 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Blair in Ireland
The Blairs were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 52.1% of them (1,156 people). Next came Derry (294), Down (281), Tyrone (166) and Donegal (70).
Blair average age in 1911
The average Blair in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 28.1 for men and 29.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Blair literacy in 1911
Of the Blairs whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 15.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (141), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (86), followed by Jane, Annie, Sarah and Elizabeth.
Blair occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Blair's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (432) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (6.2%), general labourer (3.6%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.2% of all Blairs, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Blair?
Most Blairs, 60.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24%), Roman Catholic (6.8%), Methodist (4.1%) and Congregationalist (1%).
